it’s because Mello is dead—that’s why he’s up above Near (in heaven? he is still holding the cross), that’s why he doesn’t have the scars any more. the Death Note is falling from his hand to Near’s. the corner of the Death Note is a puzzle, because Mello’s death and the information he left for Near were the last pieces of the puzzle; that’s how Near was able to finally outwit Light. and look at Near’s face—he didn’t want Mello to die, no matter how much Mello may have hated him. even the background colors are significant; Mello and Near are definitely like fire and ice. white represents Near’s generally blank expressions and his use of pure logic. red represents Mello’s volatility and violence, as well as the fires that burned him.
